Adventure Blog #74

August 31, 2024

Welcome to Blog #74 and hard to believe that it is both the last holiday in summer and I have actually written 73 Blogs before this one.

This has been a BIG exciting week!  After five months of paper gymnastics I am now compliant with both the state and federal governments. In some casea I had to send necessary paper documentation in over and over again. It was the pure test of persistence and patience. This now means being able to get grants and also run the money directly through my new 501c3-no middle people taking a percentage.

AND, a biggie is that after a second try I was awarded a Green Grant. The grant will help with a two seater Kawasaki Mule farm vehicle for hauling debrie and moving equipment and trees around the property. There are also some nice funds for more clearing of trees, hau, and bamboo. So, I am over the top happy and will keep you posted on the outcomes.

Another move toward progress is the completion of a backyard patio cover. The construction materials are finally gone and I can now plan and plant a back yard. A friend gave me some special architectyral looking grass which will control erosion and be planted this afternoon.

I bought all these beautiful old growth redwood beams from a man on Lanai who had built a big house and sold me the extra wood. He threw in these two big chunks of wood that will be sanded, stained and used as benches. I also have some lattice which will make a front fence with stephanotis growing on it. I have been waiting for months to get these babies moved into place.

It has been a busy week with two trips to Kahalui. The first was for erands and to pick up my friend Cheryl who flew in to start her house project. The second was Thursday to meet my old buddy and surfer Jericho Poppler. We attended the Maui Cultural Center for the Maui premier for the film The Shape of Things-a story about the great and legendary surf board designer Dick Brewer. It was a fun evening as we went to dinner afterwards with the producer Bob Campi and others involved with the film. I look pretty bedraggled in the picture as it was a long drive in with a road closure at Hookipa and a long detour up through Makawao to get there just in time for the film. The drive is generally like a meditation and the yellow and white ginger are in full bloom all along the road.

We have had a lot of rain in the last week, but no hurricanes thank gosh. Actually, I hear  the big island is supposed to shield us here in Hana from hurricanes which is a comforting thought.

Gotta run now-the garden is calling. Thanks for tuning in and wishing you a nice Labor Day and great week.

Aloha Nui,

Vicky
