Vicky Durand’s Adventure Blog #76

Welcome to Blog #76

September 29. 2024

Thanks for tuning in. I got caught up in yard work yesterday and totally over did it. Now, being a day late and feeding time on Sunday afternoon, so this will be a short one. And, I must admit these are difficult to get back to after a vacation. I got back Tuesday and have been busy trying to recoup and get my momentum back.  I had a wonderful trip seeing all my family-two daughters, four grand adults, and four great grand children. It makes me happy to see everyone doing so well and making their way in the world. The visits were wonderful but all the flying and airports were a bit much-particularly navagating the crowded air ports like San Francisco, Charlotte and Denver. Traveling all across America and back made me especially happy to be home where I can grow my own food in a welcoming temperature without air conditioning or heat. I met some new friends along the way and that was a bonus, but I am so thankful to make it back home to all my four leggeds. I was welcomed with over whelming love and attention from all of them especially Mana, my doodle. All week now she has been a bottomless pit of required affection and togetherness.

I harvested tomatoes and green beans for dinner on Wednesday night. Yesterday I cut back all the beautiful red ‘uala (Hawaiian potatoes) that were infringing on my back yard. They were a staple crop in ancient Hawai’i and grow like a week here. Among other recipes they are delicious boiled and mashed with coconut milk and also made into a tasty salad which I just had at a wonderful Hana Gardenlands brunch.

My paper work arrived this week to set up my 501c 3 for Koali Niu. I am looking forward to this next step here and the Green Grant getting finalized so we can start some clearing at the end of the month. Also wondering if I can drive my Kawasaki Mule home from Kahalui. Mary, a friend and retired airline pilot, also got a grant for a Mule and maybe we can do the trip home together and save the hauling $$. It would be like Alvin Straight driving his lawn mower 300 miles to see his brother. We only have about 40 miles if we could get them hauled out to Haiku past the fast traffic of Kahalui.

Indrajit is now making coconut rope and looking for elongated coconuts that were used for rope. He and a group are returning in a few weeks to do some more planting.

Life is exciting with all the projects.

Gotta run for now.

Aloha Nui
