Vicky Durand’s Adventure Blog #71

Welcome to Adventure Blog #71

It is a gorgeous sunny day, we have been for a morning swim and I  am writing this from my front patio looking out to the sea-down the beautiful kaupo Coast. It has been a very busy, fun, and productive two weeks!

My trip to Oahu included a day stuffed with appointments-one right after another. My friend Jean graciously hosted me for three nights and it was great spending time with her as well asI seeing some other friends. On Friday morning I gave a book talk to some women in a correction facility which was very interesting, moving, and rewarding. They were all very interested and grateful  that I would go there and spend time talking with them. I shared some of my mother’s important messages from my Wave Woman book and they all seemed to “get it”. They asked a lot of questions and we had some nice conservations. I donated fifteen books for their library so hopefully the messages will sink in.

Saturday my friend Jericho Poppler flew in and we shared an amazing room overlooking all of Waikiki. Jericho surfed after us and in 1957 she started WISA Women’s International Surfing Association with chapters all over the world. Along with Rell Sunn they started the Women’s Professional Surfing Association.

Sunday eve we attended the last film at the Surfing Film Festival at the Honolulu Museum (Locked In ) from the archives of Bud Brown shown by Anna Trent. Anna gave an eloquent and beautiful speech on the historical essence of our surfing which brought tears to some eyes. It was kind of like how the “West Was Won” with pictures of all the surfing kapuna who has passed on.

I came back  to Hana on Monday morning and Jericho flew back with me. I haven’t been doing much work but we are having a wonderful time talking about many subjects. Yesterday day I got the tent moved out of the back patio and set up on the other side and a table and chairs set up in back looking up to the coconuts on the hill.

I picked a lot of mangos this morning from my friend MC’s yard and need to process them for chutney.

Patio construction starts Monday and we move forward again. I can hardly wait……

My partner Indrajit made the New York Times this last week with a story about coconuts. I applied for another grant and am waiting to hear.

Thanks for tuning in and Wishing you a great week!

Aloha Nui,

Vicky

  1. I LOVED the article in The New York Times. Congratulations to Indrajit!!! Your trip to Oahu was action packed! Good for you for giving a book talk in the women’s correctional facility. That must have been really something.
