Vicky Durand’s Adventure Blog #72

Welcome to Adventure Bog #72

August 17, 2024

It has been a quiet week with my friend Jericho gone but a great week for  progress with a back yard and it is taking shape.  James showed up on Monday to start the back patio cover. What a relief to have a real professional on the job who actually makes things happen in a timely manner. He works till 5:00 not smoking pot, acting goofy and quitting early with a million excuses. It is a reminder that when one door closes, often another better one can open. That is exactly what happened here. In two weeks the roof should be on and I can start the patio floors. I feel blessed as he has a great reputation for being one of the best builders here. Being such a small community everyone seems to know the great people vs the not so great. And there is always a lot talk…….

And, speaking of talk, people are starting to find out about our coconut gene bank project and I am getting some good feedback from locals. This is really important here where everyone is suspicious of new comers and with good reason as in the 1940’s so many families were talked out of their precious land. Generations later no one has forgotten.

Before attaching the patio cover beams on the outside a large beam had to be installed on the inside wall. A lot of stuff had to be moved and the inside became a construction site again for a while, but not a problem as an end is in sight.

My social life is building with so many new friends and acquaintences. Yesterday I was invited to a gorgeous brunch for a photo shoot at a new venue here in Hana. They have a food truck and a few beautiful little bamboo pavilions for various events. A new friend Niketa came here from Bimminey (sp?) Island in the Caribbean to be the executive chef. Everything was superb and such a variety of delicious food and a great group of people.

Niketa, Jasmine and Mikala

I have jobs calling so will close for this week. Wishing everyone a great coming week and thanks for tuning in.

Aloha Nui,

Vicky

  1. I’m very happy that James seems to have come to the rescue with your patio, Vicky! Clearly, you’re learning so much, not only about building a house from scratch and starting a coconut grove, but, as if that weren’t enough, also about who’s who in Hana. How nice, too, to be meeting and making friends with new neighbors.
